Student Profiles

Jeremy Ahearn '23Jeremy Ahearn

I chose Global Studies because it presents the world as it is鈥攊ntricate and interconnected. In taking courses across disciplines, I was encouraged to grapple with a wide range of perspectives taken from different buildings on campus.

The highlight鈥攁nd greatest representation鈥攐f my experience as a Global Studies major was the student-led seminar I co-conducted during my Senior year. Titled Defiance: Voices of the Global South, this semester-long seminar explored themes such as labor movements, resistance, and justice through authors born in formerly colonized regions.

After graduation, I will be attending the London School of Economics to follow a program in Development Studies. During this time, I hope to better understand the distressing transition into the market-based society we live in today.

My long-term goal is to one day teach at a university not-unlike Loyola (or, Loyola, if they would so kindly have me back!). In my free time, I鈥檓 an avid reader, coffee enthusiast, and fan of Liverpool football club.

I chose Global Studies because it allowed me to bridge the gap between various facets of global issues and to learn about them from various perspectives. My experience abroad in the Balkans was by far the highlight of my time as a Global Studies major. By physically seeing historical sights and learning about complicated political systems abroad I was able to gain an invaluable deeper understanding of the regional issues present. Global Studies accompanied with my time in the Loyola-Towson Army ROTC program fostered my love for service to the U.S. and to the greater global community. After graduation, I will be attending American University鈥檚 School of International Service to obtain my MA in U.S. Foreign Policy & National Security. I also commissioned as a 2LT Military Intelligence officer in the Army National Guard through ROTC. Global Studies was the perfect major for me to pursue my passions in intelligence, diplomacy, and service whilst pairing well with Army ROTC.

I was drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of the Global Studies major. I appreciated that I could tailor my courses to my specific interests and goals within the fields of political science, sociology, history, and economics. The senior capstone course was one of the highlights of my time as a Global Studies major. I looked forward to the engaging conversations we would have each week as we wrapped up all of the topics we covered during our major and worked on our capstone projects. After graduation, I pursued a year of service with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps where I served as an immigration legal advocate with survivors of gender-based violence. In fall 2023, I will be attending Marquette University for a Masters in Political Science.

Kellianne Hickey '16, Global Studies Medalist

What really made me decide to become a Global Studies major was seeing Tony Blair speak my first year at Loyola. I wanted to understand how the world works a little better. The way the major combines political science, economics, history and sociology was very appealing to me. Going to college at a Jesuit school as a Global Studies major definitely changed my perspective on life. My experience at Loyola exposed me to the many problems that plague society, such as racial and gender inequality, but also deepened my resolve to actively fight these forces to create a better tomorrow.  My favorite Global Studies experience would have to be working on my project for the Senior Seminar Class: "Title IX: Promoting a Safer Loyola.鈥 We were able to take the global phenomenon of gender violence and apply it to the local problem of sexual violence on college campuses. To see months of work come together in the final initiative that we presented was very fulfilling. Thank you for a great four years!

I chose Global Studies because it offered me a chance to study issues I care about from multiple perspectives and points of view. I learned to see global problems as local problems, and gained analytical skills across various fields 鈥 from economics to political science, to sociology and more. My experience abroad in Chile was only reinforced and enriched by the courses I took in Global Studies.  After graduation, I have accepted a job in the Analyst Development Rotational Program at UnitedHealth Group in Columbia, MD.

I chose Global Studies as my major because it fit my various interests and allowed for me to expand as both a student and a person. Being a Global Studies major has enhanced my experience at Loyola by introducing me to incredible professors and some of my best friends. Upon graduation, I will start working in New York City as a Marketing Project Manager at Lokai.

Michael Intrabartola '16

Michael IntrabartolaAfter graduation I will be commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the New York Army National Guard. While being an Infantry officer part time I will be attending the NYPD academy with aspirations of joining their counterterrorism unit. My reasoning for studying Global Studies at Loyola was to gain a better knowledge of world culture as I will be deployed overseas at some point during my career. Understanding other cultures just as much as your own is important in the United States today because most jobs you walk into provide groups of individuals from many different cultures. Being able to understand where they come from and to build a strong team out of that is a critical trait to any employer. I hope to take the knowledge gained from my time spent in the Global Studies department forward with me to help lead my soldiers in a diverse world and to serve the diverse population of New York City.
